TUTOR'S COMMENTS AND ADVICE TO STUDENT:

James

Thank you for your assignment.  Please read the comments on this PT3 in conjunction with those on the assignment text.

A maximum of 10 marks were available for participation in the TGF activity (Unit 1 Activity 2).  You are awarded the full marks for making a number of postings that included useful detail and a helpful questioning approach.

A maximum of 15 marks were available for relating issues raised by the question to concepts from Block 1.  You might, for example have identified and accurately described your chosen 'Ps', made appropriate and justified links to speakers views and incorporated a range of ideas from Block 1 to test convincingness of arguments.

This question was particularly seeking mention of Mintzberg's '5 Ps' (you might recall the exercise from the tutorial?)  Marks were available for identifying, explaining and applying this model.  Unfortunately despite a highly readable answer as the 5Ps element is missing those marks cannot be awarded.  There is some helpful reference to the speakers, although from an OU point of view, don't underestimate the value of quotations and citations.  Some useful material is seen to be included in your account and the use of this material is skilful with good evidence of debate depth.  You do include mention of some material drawn from Block 1, for which marks are also available.  8 marks awarded.

A maximum of 15 marks were available for the structure and quality of the argument you presented.  You needed to have included both of the identified perspectives, giving due weight to arguments presented.  The presentation will need to have been appropriately structured and, of particular importance, a sensible and reasoned conclusion should have been provided.

Clearly you have given some thought to what the best way of presenting your argument might be.  Your work includes a particularly sound introduction eminently demonstrating how material can be conveyed succinctly.  Your conclusion likewise was seen to draw together the key factors you discussed, albeit that those factors did not include all the detail being sought by the marking criteria.  It is possible to identify that you have referred to both speakers (see comment regarding quotes above) and there is a good attempt to relate their perspectives to the material.  12 marks awarded.

Part 1 = 30 marks

Part 2 answers were looking for demonstration of a critical approach to the information provided in the argument and a well-justified and intelligent interpretation of the situation.  It required a perceptive grasp of concepts explored in Block 1 and that these concepts were applied appropriately to the situation depicted (application should involve clear description and evaluation of strategy).  Answer structuring was important, including the application of clear referencing practice.

It is clear that you have attempted to engage with the case study, identifying a good range of critique.  Again, do not forget the value of direct quotations.  The work is presented with a high standard of attention to detail and there is a strong attempt to incorporate material drawn from the Block 1 material.  Some effort to explain terminology utilised is identified and this is helpful because it helps to demonstrate that you understand the material.  Generally statements made are underpinned - in other words do not simply say that something does apply but explain why you feel this is so.  The answer demonstrates good attention to structuring.  A few areas for development are highlighted on the text but in general this is an interesting and considered answer.

Part 2 = 53 marks

Overall strengths
*  Strong attempt to respond to the assignment questions
*  Contribution to TGF activity
*  Inclusion of critique and depth of response.

Notable areas for development
*  Ensure that your high standards of presentation, critique and explanation are delivered consistently

Congratulations on completing your first TMA.  I hope this feedback is helpful.  If there is any aspect of this work you would like to discuss further then please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Regards
Hazel
